Building Overview
If at this point you are trying to decide whether or not you are capable of building an htpc, you probably are. People who are not probably stopped at the word ‘motherboard’. There are hundreds of resources available online for building an htpc to serve as your home theater system. They include step-by-step guides well-documented with pictures and open forums to discuss questions. Still not convinced? Here are the basic steps you will have to complete to building your custom htpc:
Open the case: yes, you will have to open the htpc case that will house the rest of your hardware
Install cooling fans: this is merely screwing in place a couple of pieces of metal to your computer case
Install the processor on the motherboard: many motherboards come with a processor so this step is done for you. For those that do not, it will require opening a lid, taking the protective back off of your processor, placing the processor into position (it will only fit in one place… hard to mess this up), and closing the lid to lock it in place.
Place the motherboard into the case: simply position it and screw it in place.
Install the hard drive: you will probably have to unscrew another panel to position this but then you merely have to screw it in and plug it into the motherboard.
Install the DVD drive: position, screw, and plug it in
Power supply: the only challenge here is that it might be a little heavy. Position in and screw it down to hold it in place.
TV Tuner Card: plug into a PCI slot or external USB port (depending on the model). Visit www.watchingtvonyourpc.com for more TV Tuner card information.
Software: you will have to install the OS (operating system, probably Windows, Linux, or OSX). Step by step instructions come with the OS cd. Next you will install the drivers for your hardware (found on the cds which accompany your parts). Simply put the cd in and follow instructions. Install the software you wish to use to watch and record TV on your pc. This can be a retail product or one of the very good free software products available online.
Hook it all in: plug the cable box or satellite connection into the computer and the computer into the TV and run the software you just installed to setup your preferences.
Maybe you believe now. Building an htpc is a challenge but is extremely possible using the resources available on the web. If you made it this far, you are more than capable. Most of the challenge will be picking which parts are best for you. Then you merely have to screw them into the right places.
